NIMBYism in the UK
"With pressure on ageing energy and transport infrastructures mounting, is it time to put projects of national importance ahead of local concerns?"

Hosted by the Royal Geographical Society - 3 March 2010

So why are we doing this...?

"Now in Cellarhead in a field my parents use to own and where my ponies use to live, stand two wind turbines. I remember their erection going to appeal many times, I drive by most days and never even notice them, my kids just think they're 'cool'. They are the way we're going and all those sad folks out there are going to have to get use to it, 'cause its going to happen!"

We know that there are those people who will say that we are campaigning for the Maer Hills wind turbines because we are in bed with the developer. And of course nothing that we say will persuade those people any different. However, the truth is that we are all people who have a genuine and passionate desire to see our planet survive. And we know that across the country the biggest single difficulty that the renewable energy industry has is delays in achieving planning consent for wind turbines due to highly organised protests.

This is not an issue unique to Maer Hills - it is being repeated many times over across the country and it has to stop. There is a whole network of anti-wind protestors out there who have become skilled at frightening local residents into opposing wind power developments - often for a whole array of fatuous reasons - they normally have nothing new to say and no real evidence to support the objections they raise.

But we have decided to take a stand and put forward the voice of reason - because we believe that when people are properly informed they will form their own point of view. We also know from what we have been told that this normally results in local people being overwhelmingly supportive.

Unfortunately it tends to be a small band of noisy and highly organised campaigners whose voices get heard - the silent majority may as well not exist as far as the politicians are concerned. But we feel passionately that this is wrong and that we must present the voice of reason even though we run the risk of becoming the focus of the anti-wind campaigners annoyance by doing so.

The quotes at the top of each page on this website are all genuine comments taken from emails we have received from people who have contacted us through the site.

Effective democracy is all about making sure that everybody affected is well informed, knowing what they believe and why. And challenging commonly held views to make people think differently. This website is all about handing power to the people who matter - YOU!!!
